Valentines day is fast approaching. Some couples prefer cuddling up with their other half while watching romantic movies. Others would rather throw themselves into volcano than even think about doing anything romantic. I on the other hand would rather eat all the food and drink all the cocktails that anyone could throw at me. If you follow me on instagram, you will have noticed I’m consuming a lot of burgers lately. Hence why I couldn’t really turn down the opportunity to try the Valentines Day Menu at Bun & Bowl last night as it’s simply the best deluxe burger and shrimp restaurant in Birmingham.
The fattie that I am, I was obviously the first one to show up. I opted for the Long Island Beach Tea: vodka, gin, tequila, Malibu, Cointreau, lime juice, syrup. Once all the bloggers were in, we were introduced to a wonderful violin player who kindly serenaded us throughout the meal. Once we were all seated, the main appetiser whizzed straight out to our table. We were greeted with a Mushroom Cappuccino with hot soy milk, accompanied by a canape of avocado, smoked salmon and cavier. Presentation in itself was outstanding, and the mushroom texture was so warm and tantalising. I am the biggest fan of smoked salmon, so the first course went down a treat. Even more so when the waiters bought out some Red Champagne: Moet Champagne, topped with Strawberry coulis. Simply divine!
I want to keep mentioning that the presentation of the food at Bun & Bowl is outstanding. Each dish is carefully prepared to perfection. But I must ask…have you ever been serenaded with ‘My Way‘ by Frank Sinatra while eating an oyster? I have and I’d definitely do it again. When the ‘Pearl For My Love’ oyster starter was bought out to try, a few of the bloggers were hesitant – as not all had tried one before. I am one of those people who grew up trying everything from oysters to octopus and shark, so eating an oyster was a walk in the park. I truly believe seafood is an acquired taste, but the saltiness of these oysters really hit the spot. The texture is fairly rubbery, so if you’re not a fan of working for your food, this one might not be for you. The chef however, is happy to serve an alternative option.
Look how juicy the burger looks! Topped with tomato and lettuce, the main course (Bun & Burger Bowl A La Rossine) was a ‘slider’ beef burger with onion confit, glazed with port wine, fois gras scallop with truffle dressing, all served with skinny fresh potato fries. The meat on the burger is rib-eye and was incredibly tender. Don’t let the size of the burger fool you, it was genuinely filling, especially after consuming two other courses and cocktails. I appreciate food more when served on wooden boards as your experience feels more rustic. The mesh fries basket was a winner (I jokingly asked the manager if I could quietly slip it into my bag to take home). They also serve a chicken burger as an alternative.
Last but not least, the final course came out very promptly. It was a dessert meringue, topped with mint sorbet and fruit. After such a hearty meal, you need something to cleanse the palet so it worked really well. We finished off the night with a Raspberry Vodka and Baileys shot, and the chef came out from the kitchen to introduce himself to us all. It was a very warming and genuine final touch to the night.
I’ve been meaning to try Bun & Bowl for a while now, so given the opportunity to try out the Valentine meal was a fantastic treat. The set meal will be available on the most loved up day of the year – February 14th and will cost £30 for one starter, main and dessert. There is a complete menu which will be shown on the day with other alternative dishes. The restaurant is very welcoming and staff extremely polite. The restaurant is perfect for that ‘fuss free’ Valentines Day meal and there are still a few spaces available. Just don’t forget to clap for the violinist afterwards! Please note: We were invited to the Bun & Bowl to try their set menu, complimentary. All opinions are my own.
Bun & Bowl: Deluxe Burger And Shrimp Restaurant can be found at Unit 11, The Cube, Birmingham, B1 1RS.
