Eco-Friendly and Organic Cafe | The Hive Café & Bakery

I run an eco-friendly plant business myself, so I know the importance of sustainability and using plastic-free materials. This is why I absolutely love Hive Cafe and Bakery, located in the Jewellery Quarter. They go one step above the rest to assure customers of its plastic free policy – something more places should inspire to do.

THE HIVE – JEWELLERY QUARTER

The Hive is a thriving community hub, renowned as being one of the most memorable places to eat in Birmingham. Located in a historic building, this an award-winning organic café and bakery hosts a range of craft workshops, exhibitions and event spaces throughout the year. Priding themselves as a plastic-free independent, The Hive serve up just 18 of their very best dishes, rotating as a new seasonal menu appears. Everything tastes fresh and they vow to use their own produce from the rooftop garden. Each dish served is affordable, healthy and 100% vegetarian. Not forgetting that vegan options are also available.

WHAT I ATE

I dug into my Indian Spiced Scotch Hen’s Egg, Mango Chutney, Tandoori Masala Mayonnaise & Hive’s Salad (£7.50). Filled with aromatic flavours, with a tang of chutney, it was a comforting lunch dish that I’d eat a thousand times over. As you browse the menu, you will see staff working behind the scenes in the open kitchen to prepare dishes for the day. Getting this immersive view of food prep is really enticing, especially knowing that what you’re about to eat was likely prepped just minutes before.

The Hive Jewellery Quarter

From fresh soups, light bites and main meals, you’ll leave here full and content, I guarantee it. Inside you’ll find only plant lined paper cups, wooden cutlery, paper straws, glass bottles and paper bottles. Their lunch menu is seasonal, and is served from midday to 3pm. Breakfasts from 8-11am and lunch from 12-2pm. No booking necessary. Smaller dishes are also available for children at half price. It’s understandable to see why a host of workshops and events are held here, it’s certainly one of the most calming and inventive places in the city.
