A Friday Night Dinner at Akash Tandoori: One of Birmingham’s Oldest Curry Houses

There’s something genuinely lovely about being invited back to a restaurant you lived next to for years. Six years on, we returned on a Friday evening, this time with our own little ones in tow.

A little back story – we lived around the corner from Akash (and the family who run it) when we were based in Stirchley, back in 2018. It was wonderful to see them all again. Akash has been a firm fixture in Stirchley for decades and is one of the oldest curry houses in the area. The moment we walked back in, 5:30pm on a Friday evening, the staff were immediately there welcoming us. They’re so polite and utterly accommodating, making us feel at ease with two little kids in tow. Let’s face it, dining out as a parent can be brutal sometimes but we’re making the most of it right now and it’s something we love to do.

What we ate at Akash

The food was absolutely wonderful, as always. The butter chicken was excellent (and arrived on a full plate which I wasn’t expecting!) but it was still full of flavour and is exceptionally creamy. The saag aloo was proper comforting and well-seasoned. The mushroom rice was another standout as it’s something we always order so we compare all curry houses with this one, really. It was pretty excellent from start to finish and all dishes came out piping hot. The kids were mesmerised by the lamb chops sizzling on the plate, very cute!

For starters, we ordered the lamb chops which were the most appealing dish on the table. The fish pakora was tasty – but I don’t think I’d order again as there are many other options that I’d prefer. The kids had their own nuggets and chips, but predictably couldn’t resist sneaking bites from our plates which is always a good sign. We’re making a real effort to take them out to restaurants more often right now and expose them to different cuisines. There were other families dining when we visited who we got chatting to, so it never felt like an odd choice to bring little ones along.

One thing worth knowing: the chefs are genuinely happy to tailor dishes to your preferences and whether that’s allergen-related or simply a matter of taste. That kind of flexibility makes Akash feel like a restaurant that really cares about people dining with them, not just its menu. Thanks for having us back and no doubt we’ll see you again soon.
